Roof insulation types

There are many types of insulation for lofts and roofs - and walls too! The insulation that you will need (and want) to keep your home cosy depends on a lot of factors. There are many ways roof insulating materials are made and some have better properties than others. Here we'll try to give you lots of useful information about the different types of roof insulation you can choose, but if you are in any doubt, it's always best to call the experts at DK Roofing.

The cheapest insulators are not necessarily the best, as with most things. So, a bit of research is always recommended. We’d suggest that insulating the roof of a property is the most important area to keep the temperature of your property at the correct levels and the loss of heat to a minimum.

What is Rockwool insulation made from?

Rockwool is a mineral wool insulation (also called rock or slag wool insulation). It’s made from rock, blast furnace slag and other raw materials which are melted and spun into fibres to resemble the texture of wool. Rockwool comes in batts, rolls or loose-fill forms.

Rockwool has created an ‘ablative coated batt’ which is used for filling the voids in a loft. These hidden gaps can leave buildings vulnerable to the spread of fire, particularly following the creation of voids for the passage of services. This ablative coating gives an air seal barrier to keep fire out, but sound and heat in.

Is Rockwool the same as fibreglass?

No, Rockwool isn’t the same as fibreglass. Even though the most well-known insulating material is probably fibreglass, it has lots of drawbacks. Rockwool on the other hand is easier to work with and also has better health benefits to fibreglass.

Rockwool (or mineral wool) is heavier than Fibreglass (or glass wool). Rockwool comes in rolls or batts, whereas glasswool comes in rolls.

The Rockwool batts are stiffer and they don't bend or flop over like glasswool. Rockwool mineral wool insulation is also hydrophobic, which means it's highly resistant to moisture and water.

Fibreglass comes in lightweight rolls and is suitable for standard stud and joist spacing that is pretty much free from any obstructions. Rockwool is slightly more expensive than Fibreglass but the extra expense has benefits…

Fibreglass is not a particularly nice material to work with as it contains fibreglass, mineral wool (rock or slag), plastic fibres and some natural fibres. It’s recommended to use breathing apparatus to protect your lungs from the tiny glass and plastic particles when installing and laying fibreglass.

Is glass wool better than Rockwool?

Here are the main characteristics of the difference between glass mineral wool insulation and rock mineral wool insulation:

Glass wool mineral wool insulation:

• Glass wool is lightweight with a higher thermal efficiency meaning it has an equivalent thermal insulation value to Rockwool.
• The lightweight characteristic of glass wool creates considerable material handling advantages
• Reaction to fire – glass wool is non-combustible and has a high A1 Fire classification according to current European standards, which is good news.
• High operating temperatures - glass wool has operating temperatures of up to 230°C meaning it is ideal for applications providing fire safe installation in virtually all building applications.

Rock mineral wool insulation:

• Rockwool has a higher density and weight than glass wool. These particular characteristics of the Rockwool insulation means it has a relatively higher thermal performance.
• Reaction to fire – Rockwool is non-combustible and has a high A1 Fire classification according to current European standards, which is good news.
• Very high operating temperatures - rock wool has extremely high operating temperatures of up to 850°C meaning it is ideal for high performance fire protection applications in buildings and is also suitable for thermal insulation at extremely high temperatures for instance in industrial process pipework.

Lagging or lining the cavities in your wall or loft is crucial if you want to keep your property as energy efficient as possible. The older the property the more likely it is that insulation is not present or at the very least is insufficient compared to today’s standards of energy efficiency.

Is Rockwool good for roof insulation?

As a dense stone wool material, Rockwool loft insulation can be laid horizontally and will not slump or sag under its own weight over time. Beyond improved thermal comfort, the A1 non-combustibility and excellent sound insulation of Rockwool helps to deliver living environments which are as safe as they are sound. Kingspan Celotex is also a great insulator for lofts- it's a different material to Rockwool and has it's own unique properties.

What is Celotex insulation?

Kingspan Celotex is made by a lamination process, formed between aluminium foil facings that are glued together in a continuous laminator, where the 'adhesive' is a mixture of MDI and polyol. An added blowing agent causes this adhesive to expand into foam that hardens and is cut into manageable board sizes.

Is Celotex insulation bad for you?

The fully reacted rigid foam core and blowing agent have no known toxic effects. The fully reacted rigid foam core and blowing agent have no known EcoToxic effects. Waste material and dust may be disposed of to landill by a licensed contractor. Celotex products are NOT classified as dangerous for supply.
