With the amount of rainfall the UK gets each year keeping your gutters cleaned and maintained on a regular basis will prevent water damage to other parts of your building. What damage can be done by blocked gutters?

Cleaning out gutters twice a year - once in spring and again in autumn - can prevent major problems for a home. Regular gutter cleaning protects a building from the damage caused by run-off water or polling water which can lead to foundation damage, fascia board replacements and roof leaks - all of which can be expensive to repair. So, the saying ‘Prevention is better than cure’ rings true here.

Mould growth and foundation damage

The main role of guttering is to channel water off the roof away from a building’s foundations.

Blocked gutters cause water to pour over the sides of the gutters and pool around those foundations. So over time this can cause cracks in the supporting walls and damage to the foundations which, in a worst-case scenario, can result in the collapse of the building.

Hopefully the foundations will be okay however the overflowing water can cause damp walls and mould growth which is a health hazard.

Fascia board damage

Fascia boards hold the guttering system in place so if the gutters are clogged and fill with water the boards start to deteriorate and if they are made from wood they will rot and therefore have to be replaced.

Clogged gutters can also cause water to overflow out of the gutter and down the sides of the building. This overflowing water can seep in to the walls and cause cracks in the brickwork or stonework or if the building has wood siding then this can rot as well.

What causes damaged or blocked gutters

Gutters can be blocked with dirt, moss, twigs, leaves and weeds - the seeds of which get blown into the gutters by the wind. It’s best to have your gutters cleaned regularly to avoid damage to your property.

How do you know if your gutters are blocked?

Mould and Damp

If your gutters are blocked you may see water running down the outside your building which can cause mould to grow on the inside and outside of the wall. This is because water can penetrate through walls causing damage to paint and wallpaper which can go unnoticed if hidden behind furniture.

Pointing Damage and Moss

Clogged gutters cause them to overflow resulting in water pouring down the wall. This in turn causes damage to the brickwork or stonework and pointing. The damp that penetrates these walls can encourage moss growth which adds to the problem by retaining the water and not letting the walls dry out.

Leaking roofs and sagging ceilings

Blocked gutters stop the free flowing of water from the roof when it rains. The water can stand for hours or longer blocking the outlets. This standing water can leak into ceiling cavities causing them to sag and eventually collapse ruining building’s contents.

Water splashback damage

Water that leaks from blocked gutters onto the ground can cause splashback which can damage the walls of your property. The affected areas can suffer from this penetrating damp which is noticeable by mould growth, peeling paintwork, wood rot and unsightly cosmetic damage.
